Donster the Monster
By Ayden Du
First Place, Primary Category
Once upon a time there was a 4 year old boy. His name was Bob Banana. There was a dirty monster that lived under his bed, named Donster. Every morning Bob would wake up all dirty because Donster would sleep on him during the night. Bob’s parents were very angry that he was dirty. Bob would say, “It’s not my fault. There’s a dirty monster under my bed and he gets me dirty.” So his parents made him a pair of magical pajamas that would keep monsters away. However they were bright pink and glowed at night so Bob hated them. Bob said, “I’m not wearing those!! They are bright pink and the glow will keep me up all night!” So Bob went to bed without wearing the pajamas and once again woke up very dirty. So his parents said, “For goodness sake put the pajamas on!” That night Bob decided to tape black paper to his eyes in order to not see the glow and he put the pajamas on. The next morning he was completely clean. Bob rushed into his parents room to tell them the good news. Bob shouted, “Mom! Dad! The pajamas worked!!” He looked excitedly at his parents as they got out of bed. “I wonder where Donster slept last night. Then he noticed they were covered head to toe in dirt and he knew the answer. Now the whole family wears glowing, magical, pink pajamas at night…..including the cat.
I Like Being a Kid, Not a Grown Up
By Sissy Tao
Second Place, Primary Category
Adults always ask kids, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Easy! When I grow up, I want to be a KID. I don’t want to grow up AT ALL! I just want to stay a kid forever.
I like being a kid. I get to lie on my comfy couch and watch my iPad or the TV and I don’t have to drive anywhere. Who cares about fast or slow? Not me! I’m a kid!
I don’t want to get married, I don’t want to have a job, and I don’t want to be alone in a big, empty house with no one in it and no mommy or daddy to love me. (But my sister can’t stay. She has to grow up.)
High heeled shoes are very uncomfortable. Cooking food is really hard. Saving money is boring. Cleaning a house takes too long. Doing the dishes is for… well, for grown-ups! Not like me!
I hope nothing changes and I never grow up, and I’m just wee little me forever and ever!
Change

I loved Pythagoras. It made my day and it had everything. There was: snacks, lunch, and more! I thought I could stay in Pythagoras until I was a grade 8 student, but something terrible happened. I had to change my school from Pythagoras to Maple Lane, I didn’t know that Pythagoras had to move until one day, after my basketball class,my mother said “could I tell you some bad news”
I replied “yes…”
Mom said “your school is gone!”
said “why?”
Mom said “ Pythagoras borrowed the neighbors permission to place the school in the neighborhood by asking the owner of the neighborhood. The owner asked for some money,so Pythagoras gave some money to the owner.
Pythagoras stayed for so long that they can’t stay there anymore. The permissions that Pythagoras had expired, and the owner said “if you want to stay here a bit longer, you have to pay twice the price.
I shouldn't have replied “yes’’.
I was so sad.
There were almost tears in my eyes.
“My school is gone?”
No more snacks while school?
No more lunch while school?
N-n-no more friends? I was so sad about my friends who can’t meet me anymore.
But wait! What happens if some of my friends came to the same school as me?
Cool!
And we knew that the place that I like to play that was nearby (Maple Lane) was a public school.
So we applied to Maple Lane and were accepted to go to Maple Lane.
When we went there, I thought there was a test, but it had no tests. I enjoyed Maple Lane because I liked Principal Campbell.
He was an old man that was handsome, and he was very kind to us.
After Principal Campbell told us about the school, Principal Campbell introduced a staff member who told us about some important papers.
There’s:a form that has Maple Lane phone number,a school calendar, and a paper that tells about the couses that Maple Lane had, but anyways,I don't remember the name.
On the first day at school,I was scared.
I first met a teacher that I never met before.
One of the teachers said “hi. My name is Ms. Rana. And this is Ms. Toor.”
What? Two teachers in one class room?
Then, I found out that the classroom is double sided.
I have never seen a classroom like this before.
There was a sound that I heard before I moved to Maple lane.
It’s the bell in Maple Lane.
Then all of a sudden, the student who was in Maple lane came.
They knew the three new students who were Kendrick Edward and Edward.
Two Edward’s.
Crazy.
Cause one of the Edward must be me.
Then we met some new friends.
One of the friends from Maple Lane came to me and said “hi. My name is Alex. What’s your name?” I replied “my name is Eddie.”
Then Ms. Rana said “it’s time for outputs.”
It means that I could create anything or read a book.
It’s Fun to read a book, so I got it bit happier.
It is also fun to create things with toys.
Such as:a tablet. I made a tablet out of phone blocks.
After that, we celebrated a girl named Claire's birthday.
While the students were celebrating their birthday, me and Kendrick and Edward had to leave because it’s half day for the new students.
After some days I met some new friends For example: Alicia. I usually play with my friends in the playground.
I found out that there’s also a band in Maple Lane.
One of my bad news was that I’m often late for school, because I wake up late, but I like Maple Lane as my new school!
The Mean Teacher
By Dayna Quan
Honorable Mention, Primary Category
Once upon a time in Crofton house school there was the nicest teacher ever, named Ms. Quan. She was funny, smart, helpful and kind. She would allow the girls to do fun activities like bounce on the bouncy castle. They were allowed to have their buddies to class everyday. And she let the girls go out earlier for break before any other class. But she also was very good at teaching the girls but in a fun way. And never raised her voice.
But one day she told the girls she had to help her family in Hong Kong because her mother was sick. The girls would have a substitute teacher for the rest of the year.
The next day the substitute came. Her name was Ms. Prickleberry. And she was the meanest teacher the girls had ever met.
She forced them to do Grade 7 math even though they were in grade 2. She never let them go outside for break and instead had to sew sweaters that Ms. Prickleberry would sell to get money. They had to come to class at 6am and leave school at 5pm. But the worst thing she did was steal all the girls' favourite snacks from their lunches.
One day when the girls were exhausted from schoolwork, had all their snacks stolen, and hadn’t seen the outside for months they decided something had to be done!!!!
They installed cameras in the classroom. One in the cubby room and one in the sewing room where they made sweaters. They painted them the same colour as the wall so no one would be able to see them. When it came time to sew the sweaters, Ms. Prickleberry told the girls to get to work right away. When all of a sudden one of the cameras started to glitch and make a clicking sound because of low batteries. “What is that sound!!” said Ms. Prickleberry. She saw the camera and smashed it to pieces. “Just for that, you all have to do 10 extra pages of Grade 7 math!”
Ms. Prickleberry’s voice was hurting from yelling so much so she went to the snack room and drank all the children’s juice boxes and water. And just for fun she ate all the snacks. But she didn’t notice the camera.
The next day they showed the principal all the footage from the cameras and Ms. Prickleberry was fired!!!
Luckily Ms. Quan came back and they all lived happily ever after.
Super Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf
By Kathy Li
Honorable Mention, Primary Category
Once upon a time, there were four pigs, baby pig, sister pig, mommy pig and daddy pig, lived in a wooden house by a peaceful stream in the forest. One evening, when they were eating their yummy slop, the lights suddenly turned off.
“What happened!” asked baby pig.
“Let’s go outside and have a look,” daddy pig said.
The pig family went outside. They found a broken wire in their garden. Baby pig came up to check the broken wire and accidentally touched it -ZAP! Suddenly, baby pig grew huge muscles. Every step he took shook ground. When baby pig touched his family, all his family had super powers too. Sister pig turned invisible, mommy pig started hovering in the air, and the bowl in Daddy pig’s hands seemed to have turned to a scarf!
After some confusion, the pig family decided to find out who destroyed the wire. Baby pig dug a deep hole in the garden, mommy pig flew up to the tree and picked lots of leaves. Daddy pig covered the leaves on top of the hole and made it looked like a leaf pile. Sister pig made her family invisible. They waited in the garden.
The Big bad wolf appeared in the garden at midnight. FLOP, THUMP, The Big Bad wolf fell into the deep hole.
“Did you snap our wire?” asked the sister pig.
“Yes, I did that!” answered the wolf in anger.
Baby pig grabbed the wolf’s tail and pulled the wolf out the hole. The wolf struggled to escape from Baby pig’s tight grip. After a while, the wolf was exhausted and gave up.
“Why did you do that?” Daddy pig asked.
“Sorry, I want to shoo you out to get your house,” the wolf said in a trembling voice. “Please forgive me and I will never come back.”
Mommy pig and Daddy pig whispered to each other for a while. Then Daddy pig told Wolf,” We will let you go, but don’t even think about coming back.”
When the wolf got ready to run, Mommy pig yelled to him,” Go down by the stream for two days, there is a beautiful pond. you will have enough place to build your new house there.”
The wolf got to the pond. He was very happy about the new place and decided to build a house there. He never came back to pig family’s house. He was terrified to death when he thought about the pig family’s house because he still didn’t know who caught him at that
night.
“How did you know there is a pond down this stream?” daddy pig asked mommy pig.
“I saw it when I flew up above the tree, flying powers are awesome!” replied mommy pig.
“Super powers are awesome!” Baby pig and Sister pig cheered.
Going to a new school
By Rachel Zhang
Honorable Mention, Primary Category
Once there was a girl named Rose.
One day her parents told her, "Rose, we are moving, so that means you will have to go to a new school."
"NOOOO, I don’t want to!" yelled Rose.
"Sorry, but we have to," said her mom.
"OK," said Rose, "but I’m not gonna like it!"
"School starts tomorrow," said her mom.
The next day, Rose was very nervous. She did not like to go to new schools. When the bell rang, "Bye Rose, hope you have a good day at school," said her dad.
"Bye," said Rose, who felt sweat in her hands. She sat down at her desk. She could hear nothing but her heartbeat.
Anna, next to her, was very mean to new students. Anna was mean to Rose when they were doing art.
Anna said, "Haha, you can't draw that glass bottle!" She said to Rose.
That day, when Rose was getting her bike keys, she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was Ella, a student in her class.
"Hey Rose," said Ella, "want to bike home with me?"
"Sure," said Rose.
As they were talking, a voice interrupted them, "Bye banana head!!!" It was Anna, who had been mean to Rose at art class.
"Don't mind her," said Ella. They hopped on their bikes and peddled away, leaving Anna behind.
As Rose got home, she thought, "Maybe going to a new school wasn't so bad."
She told her parents what happened at school.
